ROLU ROKALI SIGNIFICANCE
Food is the essence of life on this Earth.

Even though we deem money to be most important aspect of one’s life, in reality, it is the food that we consume, is the most important part of our life.

In olden days, everything was done by the people themselves. Those were the time automation was unheard of.

And farming was the most respected and important. So, the tilling, sowing, watering, fertilising, harvesting, separating, cleaning, pounding all of these were done by hand.

In converting crops into edible form of grains and flour, the rolu rokali played an essential and exclusive part.

In these modern days, most of us do not know the importance of rolu rokali (mortar and pestle) because we have lost connect with our traditional processes and values.

ROLU ROKALI
Weeks or even months before the wedding, the entire community would gather in to assist in pounding the food essentials required for the wedding feast on the rolu, rokali.

It was not just the grains, turmeric, chilli and other spices were also pounded using the rolu rokali.

Everything was done by the community with love annd affection.

The worshipping of the rolu rokali and thirugali in Telugu weddings is a way of thanking the tools that help us make our food, the means to survive.

ROLU LAKSHMI, ROKALI NARAYANA
It is believed that the rolu represents Goddess Lakshmi, the rokali is the Lord Narayana. Lord Shiva is represented by the thirugali.

Legend has that Goddess Parvati prayed to the above deities for abundance of foodgrains.
